How do I know if I need counseling?
Chances are if you’ve considered it, you can benefit from it. If you’ve begun noticing things such as difficulty sleeping, unintentional weight gain or weight loss, depressed mood, increased anxiety, low self-esteem, high unmanageable stress, disproportionate anger or irritability, increase in substance use, or social withdrawal, these can all be signs that it may be time to seek professional help.
What should I expect?
You get out of therapy what you put into it. If you are a person who is genuinely curious about your behavior, emotions, and life circumstance, you will enjoy therapy. I pride myself on being able to determine how much — or how little — to push my clients. Everyone grows at their own rate, so there is no magic period of time that is guaranteed for healing. With that said, I have noticed a strong correlation with client success & taking notes during sessions. I often recommend clients keep a note in their phone of things that come up between sessions so there is less pressure to remember what has come up between sessions.
How do I find the time?
Most clients are seen on weekday evenings after the typical 9a-5p work day in our conveniently located office in downtown Denver. Clients who travel for work, work odd shifts, or have a hard time being motivated to sit in another office after a long day do often opt into phone sessions that can be done from the comfort of your own home! I have found that clients often feel more comfortable opening up on phone sessions than in person, so phone sessions are often encouraged.
How long do sessions last?
Therapy sessions typically last for 50 minutes on a weekly basis, leaving 10 minutes to write notes & plan for our next session. During the beginning stages of your therapeutic journey, you will be seen weekly for 4 weeks. During the fourth session, you and your therapist will determine if you need to be seen more or less frequently. It is recommended to be seen at least 2x monthly in order to continue ongoing growth.
Stand alone diagnostic evaluations are available for those who would like to know if they have a mental health diagnosis. This is commonly utilized by those who are genetically predisposed to mental illness or substance use disorders. These types of evaluations can be used for cognitive disorders as well, such as ADHD, dementia, and traumatic brain injury. These sessions can be shorter or longer than typical counseling sessions.
What should I expect to pay?
Rhiana L. Holmes, PLLC bills at $150 an hour. Documentation is made available to all clients who wish to seek reimbursement through insurance. It is recommended to contact your insurance company beforehand to determine how you will submit reimbursement forms. If you need additional information in regards to what to ask your insurance, please call us or fill out a contact form so we can help you with the process. Clients either mail or fax a “Superbill” which is a document that shows you paid for mental health counseling at the time of service & are requesting to be reimbursed by insurance.
How do I know if a therapist is right for me?
It is generally recommended that you reach out to a handful of therapists when trying to find a good fit. When first beginning counseling, it can be difficult to know what you need from a therapist. I have found that clients typically know if we are a good fit after a free phone consultation. During this consultation, you will be asked what brings you to consider counseling, if you’ve done it before, if it was helpful, and how I can be helpful.
I am often told that the humor I implement during sessions helps clients feel relaxed and safe. I enjoy finding a balance between finding laughter in the mundane & sitting in deep emotion to find purpose in it. I often use analogies to help clients conceptualize abstract psychological theory.
What kind of people do you typically see?
Clients of Rhiana are quite diverse, ranging from corporate executives, attorneys, physicians, teachers, other therapists/counselors, artists, to young adults just beginning their careers. Many clients discuss intimate relationships, work/life balance, career changes, relationships with families, and overall life satisfaction during sessions.
